The Erzgebirge (Krušné hory, Ore Mountains)

Fascination of the largest tin chambers in Europe

From the Elbe Sanstone Mountains in the east to the Elster Mountains and the Vogtland in the west ranges the Erzgebirge, which forms a natural border between Saxony in Germany  and Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

The highest peak of the Erzgebirges is the Keilberg (Klínovec,  1,244 m) in the Bohemian part, highest peak in Saxony is the Fichtelberg (1,215 m).

The history of settlement and culture in this area mainly was inluened by mining activities.
In the region between the cities of Aue and Schwarzenberg tin, silver and other metals have been exploited since medieval times.

When the last mining had finished the mine shafts were closed for further mining. They were reopened to the public and attracted many visitors since.

Listening concerts in the underground cathedral-like chambers of the mines is a breathtaking and very memorable experience. Such an unusual 'music hall' is a perfect stage for a miners' brass band, string quartets or other instrumental groups.

Enjoy a guided tour into the labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. A ride with the underground mining railway as well as interesting stories about the miners and their life are also part of this unique experience.

This program is available all year round. However it is best experienced during the pre- Christmas time, when the Erzgebirge area is beautifully decorated. Tis area is famous also for its Christmas traditions and art work.
